Calories from dips can add up fast when you’re not thinking about portion control, and before you know it you’ve eaten a half cup of something that definitely wasn’t vegetables. When you’re looking for a sweet snack but without a lot of fat and calories, you must try this Skinny Pumpkin Dip recipe – even my kids love it!
When I went on a grocery tour to discuss nutrition with a dietitian, we talked about the many variations of yogurt available on grocery store shelves. Indiana Dairy shares the nutritional differences between Greek and regular yogurt (under “Dairy Products”). Basically, Greek yogurt goes through an extra straining process, removing more whey. Greek yogurt is much thicker and creamier, with twice as much protein, but 1/3 as much calcium as regular yogurt.
Cream cheese used to have three varieties: regular, 1/3 light (Neufchatel) and fat free.
You may have also seen that now, there’s a fourth: Greek Yogurt Cream Cheese.
When I was ready to lighten up my standby pumpkin dip recipe, I headed to Kroger with the intention of buying this combo of a small container of plain Greek yogurt, and a block of cream cheese:
By incorporating a plain Greek yogurt into cream cheese, you’re cutting fat, and adding protein. Many lighter recipes are now using plain yogurt in place of cream cheese and sour cream.
And then there’s the added bonus of saving yourself a step – so I was thrilled to see this Greek Cream Cheese on Kroger’s shelf:
Some Kroger stores now carry a cream cheese already blended with Greek yogurt! That totally saves us a step on our Skinny Pumpkin Dip.
I chose to blend the dip using a food processor (mine is Cuisinart) – I think it gives a creamier texture for cream cheese-based dips rather than using a mixer, but it’s totally your preference.
This lighter version uses half as much powdered sugar as some recipes call for, but still sweetens nicely.
Skinny Pumpkin Dip
Ingredients:
- 1 block (8 oz) greek cream cheese (or substitute 1/2 block regular or light cream cheese blended with 4 oz Greek plain yogurt)
- 1 15 oz can pumpkin
- 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup powdered sugar
Directions:
Blend softened cream cheese until smooth. Add pumpkin and mix well. Mix in pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon. Slowly add powdered sugar until combined. Chill until ready to serve.
Serve with grapes, apple slices, honey graham sticks and even pretzels.

- 8 oz greek cream cheese (may substitute 1/2 block regular or light cream cheese blended with 4 oz Greek plain yogurt)
- 1 15 oz can pumpkin
- 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 cup powdered sugar
