When you’re camping or headed to a picnic in the park, you can save yourself from a labor-intensive dessert, with this easy Campfire Skillet Apples recipe. It’s so easy and versatile, you can cook it indoors on your stovetop or take it out on the grill.
Last week we returned from a 5-day vacation to Indiana Dunes and South Haven, Michigan. We were able to check two items off of our summer bucket list: camping and going to the beach. Later this week I’ll share all the details of our trip!
At the KOA campground we stayed out, our cabin had its own fire ring, with a grill covering half of the ring so you could cook on top. Easy peasy!
I’ve been making skillet apples for years, it’s the quicker method of the ‘guts’ of an apple pie, without the pie crust.
It’s ideal if you have a cast iron skillet (you’ll want a handle cover), but I brought my everyday skillet and it withstood the heat just fine, but a cheaper skillet may not be able to handle heat over a fire.
Campfire Skillet Apples
Ingredients for a serving of 4:
- 5 large apples (we like Granny Smith for their tartness)
- 2 Tbs butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Peel and slice apples. I slice mine about 1/4″ thick.
Melt butter in heavy skillet over grill.
Place apples into skillet, top with brown sugar and cinnamon.
Mix gently, and stir every 2-3 minutes until apples are tender. Total cooking time is around 15 minutes, depending on how thick your apple slices are.
If you have never made skillet apples on your stovetop, you’ll have to give it a try – it’s so cinnamony-sweet and a great way to cook apples without a lot of fuss!
